This workshop is for all photographers who want to create more evocative images in the natural world-from serious beginners to advanced amateurs working in all film and digital formats. It is offered through Calypso Imaging, Inc. in Santa Cruz, California. http://www.calypsoinc.com/
During three intensive days, the workshop will alternate between shooting sessions in the field and image editing, optimizing, and printing sessions in Calypso's photo/digital teaching facility. By Sunday afternoon each participant will select an image, crop and retouch it, make aesthetic adjustments in Photoshop, and prepare the file for printing. He or she will then print a proof, make further adjustments, and finally make a 16x20 or 20x24 Lightjet print.
In the orientation session Bob will offer insights into the art of capturing ephemeral scenes of beauty and drama in nature. Presenting prints of his own work, he will talk about the circumstances that produced the images and discuss the process he has evolved for being in the right place at the right time, finding structure in a chaotic visual environment, and getting nuances of light and color onto film. He will also discuss the obstacles that commonly keep beautiful sights from translating into satisfying photographs, and how to overcome them.
For the shooting sessions, participants will rise early and return late to capture first and last light along the Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay shorelines as well as in nearby Redwood Parks. In the field, Bob will circulate among the participants to offer guidance on isolating subjects and filling the frame with interest. He will help with the mechanics of depth-of-field and metering for complex exposures. He will also coach on the use of long exposures in low light to control contrast and achieve rich color.
A portion of one midday session will be dedicated to supportive reviews of participants' slides, files, and prints from previous work.
A tripod is a must for this workshop. A beginning knowledge of Photoshop is strongly recommended.
